Stairs and railings are among the highest-visibility elements in a home — and among the most technically demanding to build correctly. Code compliance, structural attachment, baluster spacing, and the precision of the finish all matter. Our stair and railing work is handled by our finish carpentry crew with experience on both new construction and renovation projects.
We install complete stair packages for new construction and additions, replace or upgrade existing railings in Chicago homes, and install modern railing systems including metal balusters, cable railing, and glass panel systems. We also refinish and replace stair treads as part of flooring and renovation scopes.
For historic Chicago greystones and two-flats with original stair details, we restore and repair existing millwork to preserve the character of the home. For contemporary renovations, we design and install clean modern stair systems that meet current code.

Our Process
Code Review & Design
We confirm code requirements for your project — rise, run, baluster spacing, handrail height — and design a system that is compliant and looks right in the space.
Rough Framing
Stringer installation and structural attachment is completed and inspected before finish work begins. The structure needs to be right before anything decorative goes on.
Finish Installation
Treads, risers, balusters, newel posts, and handrail are installed in the correct sequence. All connections are tight, nothing wobbles.
Final Finish
Stain, paint, or natural finish is applied. All hardware is set. We walk every step and test every railing connection before sign-off.

Asked Questions
Most clients have the same questions before starting. Here are straightforward answers — no hedging.
Still have questions? Let's talkNew staircase construction and structural railing replacement typically require permits from the Chicago Department of Buildings. Like-for-like railing replacement in an existing home may not require a permit depending on scope. We identify permit requirements at the start of every project and manage the process.
